Introduction

For this unit, we were tasked with working towards a finished product based on taking a detailed look at a particular role each.  We chose to focus on creating a short mockumentary film, based on Channel 4's Supervet, but from a scripted comedy angle.

Producing our Film

Producing Our Film

Since we did not have a producer involved in our project, we all worked together to produce the film.  We all worked on finding props and set decoration - Katie and Melissa in particular worked on making posters and finding leaflets to dress the set so that it looked like an actual vet practice.  From our research into the mockumentary genre, we learned that authenticity was a key factor we needed to keep in order for the film to pass as a documentary, so that it would work as a mockumentary.  Alex also worked on the fake blood and costumes to ensure that the practical effects we were shooting looked as genuine as possible and so that our actor could pass for a real vet.

As with the props and costumes, the main filming location had to pass as a real vet, and so we looked for somewhere that looked - or that we could make look - fairly plain and clinical looking.  We scouted several potential locations, and the one we ended up with worked very well.  The exterior of the building looks interesting and unique which works with the aesthetic for a vets surgery.  The interior was also fairly plain which allowed us to decorate the set as we saw fit and we were able to light the set appropriately.  From looking at shows such as 'Come Fly With Me' the comedy of the scene shines through by the contrast between the realism of the environment contrasted with the absurdity of the characters.  Therefore we were happy that we were able to achieve a genuine-looking setting for our film as this would help add to the comedy of the film.
